Warren Hawley Holmes, II
Of San Anselmo, born March 7, 1911 in Boise, Idaho, passed away October 7, 2001 at Kaiser Hospital, surrounded by his family. He was 90 years old and left us while still celebrating life. Warren was a builder and designer in the Bay Area since 1928. Some of his legacies are the Sleepy Hollow Club House, Hillside Church of Marin, and hundreds of homes in the East Bay and Marin. During the Depression he served in the California Conservation Corps and also worked on the construction of Hamilton Air Force Base. During World War II, he built Victory ships in the Alameda Navy shipyards. He moved to Marin County in 1948. In 1965 he started Warren Holmes and Associates, and until 1994 he remodeled many homes in Mill Valley and Tiburon. He continued designing until his death. His building and design skills live on through many of his proteges; he is remembered by many as a cherished mentor. Warren's favorite spots were over a book or surrounded by nature. His favorite personal interest was encouraging others to believe in themselves, to read and to love learning. He believed that everyone you meet has something to teach you. Warren was preceded in death in 1993 by his wife of 58 years, Alma Elinor Holmes. He lives on through his son, Douglas Warren Holmes (Micky) of Danville, and daughters Janet Rose Megill (David) of Oceanside and Charlotte Ruth Blumenberg (David) of San Anselmo. He was the loving and beloved grandfather of Marcia Elizabeth, Warren Hawley III and Michael Austin Chandler Holmes of Danville, Kristin Rose and Holly Elizabeth Megill of Oceanside, and Ann Catherine, John Samuel and Ricci Joan Blumenberg of San Anselmo. He leaves many honorary sons and daughters and countless friends. There will be a Celebration of Life Memorial Service at 3 p.m. Saturday, October 27, at Hillside Church of Marin, 5461 Paradise Drive, Corte Madera. Memorial donations may be sent to the Legacy Fund (restoration of the sanctuary), Hillside Church of Marin, 5461 Paradise Drive, Corte Madera CA. 94925; or to the Zoological Society of San Diego, Attn: Memorials, Linda Smith, P.O.
