MELLIN, Robert Arthur, 82 of Novato, passed away October 9,2001. Neptune Society, Northern Calif, 415-898-1868.


Robert Arthur Mellin
After suffering a Cardio-Vascular Accident the previous week, died at Marin General Hospital on October 9, 2001. Born on February 16,1919 in Minneapolis Minnesota, Mr. Mellin graduated from the University of Minnesota where he received a Bachelor's degree with honors, including membership in Beta Gamma Sigma and Beta Alpha Psi. After additional graduate school at Northwestern University, he entered the US Navy for two years as gunnery officer on merchant troop transports involved in the Guadalcanal landings. The balance of service as a Naval officer was on a destroyer escort involved in the Okinawa invasion. He ultimately reached the rank of Commander, USNR. After the war he was employed by Hood and Strong, LLP, Certified Public Accountants in San Francisco for the next forty years becoming managing partner and continuing as a consultant after retirement. He was highly active in progressional affairs, serving for eight years on the California State Board of Accountancy, including three years as President of the board. He served as Vice-President & member of the executive committee of the California Society of Certified Public Accountants, earning the Distinguished Service Medal in 1979. He was a member of Council and Board of Directors of the American Institute of Certified Public Accountants that awarded him the Gold Medal for Distinguished Service in 1987. He also served as a Trustee of the Financial Accounting Foundation, chairman of the special investigation committee of the AICPA, advisory council of the Financial accounting and Standards Board and was honorary life member of the California Society of Accountants. Mr. Mellin was involved in numerous community and charitable organizations. He was a Domino champion and enjoyed communicating with his grandchildren by e-mail in their international locations. He is survived by his wife of 59 years, Lorraine; daughter Beth and son-in-law Gene of San Mateo; son Robert, Jr of San Anselmo; Son James and daughter-in-law Marianne of Petaluma abd eight grandchildren: Catherine, Margaret, Peter, Matthew, Haley, Amy,Joseph and Thomas. A memorial service will be held on Saturday October 20 at 10:30 a.m. at St. Patricks Church, Magnolia Avenue and King Steets, Larkspur California. The family suggests contributions to St. Patrick's Seminary 320 Middlefield Road, Menlo Park CA 94025 where Mr. Mellin served as Trustee, or to a favorite charity.
