Mass For Patrolman Radetich
SAN FRANCISCO – Requiem Mass was offered today for San Francisco patrolman Richard Phillip Radetich at St. Joseph’s Church, Tenth and Howard streets, San Francisco.
The 25-year-old officer from Ignacio was shot by an unknown gunman who fired three bullets into his patrol car as he sat writing a routine parking ticket early Friday morning. Radetich died later at San Francisco General Hospital after undergoing six hours of brain surgery.
Yesterday hundreds of friends, strangers and fellow police officers filed past the officer’s body which lay in state in the city hall rotunda.
Almost every top city official called to pay respect to Radetich, the third police officer killed in the line of duty this year and the 77th slain since the founding of the department a century ago.
Mayor Joseph L. Alioto cut short a European trip by three days to attend the funeral today.
The funeral procession began at 9:30 a.m. from Daphne’s Mortuary at 1 Church Street and proceeded to the church.
Radetich, of 468 Del Plano, is survived by his wife, Nancy, and an 8-month-old daughter, Jeanine.
He is also survived by his parents, Joseph P. and Heleyn (sic) Y. Radetich of San Francisco; a brother, James, and a sister, Jo Ellen.
