Cycle-Car Crash Fatal To Novatan

David Brian Taylor, 16, of 20 El Novato Circle, Novato, was fatally injured in a car-motorcycle crash at Rowland boulevard and Drakewood Lane, Novato, at 11:50 a.m. Sunday.

Taylor, a junior at Novato High School, who suffered a severe head injury and a possible broken neck, died at Novato General Hospital an hour after the crash police reported.

Taylor, a passenger on the rear of a motorcycle driven by John Neil Gieleghem, 17, of 6 Renata Court, Novato, was thrown to the pavement in the crash, officers said.

Taylor’s death was the fourth traffic fatality in Marin this year, the same total until this time last year.

The motorcycle, traveling east on Rowland Boulevard, collided with a car driven by Dirk Eugene Doran, 16, of 467 Calle De La Mesa, Novato, which had entered the intersection from Drakewood Lane, police said. The accident is still under investigation.

Gielehem, who suffered a bruised knee and ankle, was treated at Kaiser Foundation Hospital in San Rafael.

Taylor was a member of Post 73, Explorer Scouts, and was a cadet second lieutenant in the Air Force Junior Reserve Officers Training Corps at Novato High School.

A native of Livermore, Alameda County, he had been a resident of Marin since 1958.

Surviving are his mother, Mrs. John Young, a sister, Christine, both of Novato; two brothers, Mark Taylor of Novato and Steven Taylor of San Francisco, and his grandmother, Ione Rigell of Novato.

Funeral will be at 1 p.m. tomorrow at St. Francis Episcopal Church, Novato. Burial will be at the San Francisco National Cemetery at the Presidio of San Francisco.
