Captain Of Marin Fire Department Dies In Hospital

Edgar L. Gerhardt of Woodacre, a captain with the Marin County Fire Department, and long-time Marin resident, died yesterday at a local hospital, apparently of a heart attack. He was 49.

Gerhardt was making a tour of the Marin County Court House in San Rafael about noon yesterday, checking on fire extinguishers, when he complained of pains in his chest. He went to his own physician, who later ordered him admitted to the hospital.

Shortly after 3 p.m. he suffered an attack and died.

A Marin County fireman for the past seven years, Gerhardt lived with his wife, Theresa, at 2 Castle Rock road, Woodacre. He is survived also by two daughters, Mrs. Maryann Stone of Torrance, Mrs. Peggy Jo Pauley, Woodacre, and a step-son, Gene P. Ashlock, Escondido.

He is also survived by his mother, Mrs. R. B. Thompkins of Novato, a sister, Rosa Lee Martin,Novato, and by six grandchildren.

Gerhardt was a charter member of the Mill Valley Volunteer Fire Department.

Funeral services will be held at 11 a.m. Monday at the Harry M. Williams mortuary, San Rafael. Interment will be private.

Friends are invited to attend the funeral services Monday, Jan. 18, 1960 at 11 a.m. at the Harry M. Williams Mortuary, San Rafael; interment, private.
