Death of J.V. Ellis

J.V. Ellis, Clerk of San Quentin Prison, passed away at the Waldeck Hospital on November 9, whither he had been removed three weeks previously to undergoing a grave operation. Mr. Ellis had been in failing health for a long time, and over a year ago, went through a severe ordeal with the surgeon’s knife that gave temporary, but not lasting relief. Early in last October, he was confined to his bed, and his case was looked on as hopeless, though the attending physicians determined to try another operation as a last chance.

Mr. Ellis has been clerk of San Quentin Prison, with one break for the last 20 years. His knowledge of the finances of the institution was complete at every point, and his services were considered invaluable by successive Boards of Directors who always found in him an honorable and safe representative. It will be no easy task to fill the place he has left vacant.

Deceased has been an active factor in San Francisco politics for the greater part of his life. He represented the Old Guard of the Republican party perhaps as much as any of his recent contemporaries. But, though a stalwart partisan, his antagonism was not vindictive and left no sting behind. He had many warm Democratic friends who mourned the loss of their old opponent just as sincerely as those who had battled by his side. We extend our sympathy to his family in their hour of grief.
