J. L. Foster of Potter Valley died at his home in that place last week. He was the oldest blacksmith in northern Mendocino, and but for an incident might have been one of the owners of the Southern Pacific. He was a great friend of Charles Crocker, and was asked by him to take an interest in the overland road. He declined, thinking the project unfeasible. That is where he made the great mistake of his life. However he died peacefully and greatly respected by all who knew him.
