Death of a Pioneer Vigilante
Captain Martin Richard ROBERTS, a pioneer of California, died Thursday evening, aged 80, at his home, 904 Washington Street, San Francisco, where he had resided for half a century. He had been ailing for some time, his sickness being attributed to old age.
Deceased was the owner of the yacht Azaline, and up to a few months ago hardly a day of fine weather passed, that he did not come to Sausalito and spend a few hours on his boat.
Captain Roberts was chief aid to the Grand Marshall in the procession that celebrated the admission of California into the Union of States in 1850. He was a prominent member of the Vigilante Committee and in 1857 he was elected a member of the Board of Supervisors.
Captain Roberts was a native of England. He leaves a widow, two sons, and one daughter. His sons are Theodore Roberts, the actor, and M.R. Roberts Jr., who is engaged in business in San Francisco. His daughter is Mrs. Henry K. Moore. Miss Florence Roberts, well known in dramatic life, is his niece.
