Alice Wells, Rural School Supervisor, Long Ill, Passes
Death came last night to bring an untimely end to the life of one of Marin county’s most beloved young women, who as a teacher, companion and friend had endeared herself alike to children and teachers.
Wells, 33-year-old Marin supervisor of rural schools, succumbed to an ailment from which she suffered patiently for many months. The county of Marin, especially its country school children, suffered an irreparable loss.
She was known throughout the state for her outstanding work in the schools and was rated as one of the best of rural supervisors. Her charming personality captivated all with whom she came in contact.
A graduate of San Francisco State Teachers College, she taught in Sonoma county, became principal of the Roseland school, and was also superintendent of physical education and American Education.
In July 1927, she came to Marin county to serve as a rural supervisor and made her home in San Anselmo. She was at the time of her death vice president of the State School Supervisors Association and was past president of the Bay Section Rural Supervisors Association. She was active in the teachers groups in the county and also a member of the Business and Professional Women’s Club.
Although the ailment which caused her death was long standing, she continued cheerfully to carry on her work. Two weeks ago it became necessary to take her to St. Francis Hospital in San Francisco where she died.
Her mother resides in Richmond. She leaves four sisters to mourn her passing also.
The body is at her late residence, 78 Alder Avenue, Yolanda and friends may call there. It will be removed tomorrow to the mortuary of Keaton and Dusel where at 2 p.m. services will be held, Dr. Lynn T. White officiating. Interment will be in Mt. Tamalpais Cemetery.
