STANGENBERGER, George, of Tamalpais Valley, passed away. Mt. Tamalpais Cemetery-Mortuary, San Rafael, 415-459-2500.

George Stangenberger
George was born on July 30, 1907 to George and Nellie (Mulcay) Stangenberger in San Francisco. His mother died shortly after his birth and he went to live with his foster parents, Mr. and Mrs. William Breckenfeld. Upon Mrs. Breckenfeld's death, George went to live with his father in Corte Madera. While living in Corte Madera, he commuted to Polytechnic High School in San Francisco via train and ferry boat. It was here that he met his future wife of 59 years, Elmere. George enjoyed playing football both at Polytechnic Hi and later at College of Marin where he was on that school's first team. During his working years, he was employed with the General Land Office as a surveyor; by the Bureau of Public Roads as a road Foreman; and by PG&E where he retired in 1970 as a General Foreman. For the past 55 years, George made his home in Tamalpais Valley where he enjoyed gardening and hiking on Mt. Tamalpais. When the community decided to install a sewer system, he served as chairman of the newly formed Sanitary District. He was a member of the Tamalpais Conservation Club as well as the Masonic Lodge, both in Mill Valley and Alturas.

He is survived by his sons, Ray of Napa and Alan of Albany and granddaughter, Leah Taylor of Tamalpais Valley. His wife, Elmere passed away in 1995.

A Memorial Service will be held at Mt. Tamalpais Cemetery at 1 p.m. on Friday, September 21, 2001.
