PACE, Brice, of Sonoma, passed away September 13, 2001. Duggan's Mission Chapel, Sonoma, 707-996-3655.

Brice Pace

Was born August 26th, 1915 in New York City, and has been a resident of Sonoma for the last 15 years.

Brice had a military career that expanded over 20 years. He was an ROTC cadet while attending New York University in 1936. He became a captain at age 26, a major at 27; In 1940 he was assigned to the Adjutant General's Office on Governor's Island, New York City.

Brice Pace was called into active service as a reserved Second Lieutenant in 1940 and served with General Omar Bradley at the First U.S. Army Group Headquarters in Europe in the Spring of 1944. In 1944 Brice was sent to England and assigned as a member of General Eisenhower's staff. He crossed the channel to France where he was in charge of clearing buildings previously used for SS Troop headquarters and other areas in remote locations to set up command centers. He was transferred in 1945 to Italy where he stayed until he returned home in 1946. In 1952, he was a Diplomatic Officer with the United States Army in Ottawa, Canada. In 1953 he was promoted to full Colonel. In 1955, Brice was assigned to the 6th Army Headquarters in the San Francisco Presidio.

After the war ended, Brice became the Chief of Data Processing at the Pentagon, in Washington, D.C., from 1957-59. It was in 1959 that Brice retired from military service.

It was at New York University that Brice received a B.S. in Geology. He received his master's degree in education from Dominican College, in San Rafael. After retiring from the United States Army as Colonel, he obtained his teaching credential from San Francisco State University, and taught math at St. Rose School for girls, in San Francisco and San Rafael Military Academy, (where he was also Dean of Academics).

One of his finest achievements was being the driving force to getting the Gymnasium erected at the Pentagon, and his name is on a plaque outside the gym to this day. Brice was a past president of the Sonoma State Historic Park Association, an avid cyclist and horseback rider.
Mr. Pace is survived by his loving wife Jane Pace, of Sonoma; his children and their families: Scott (and his wife Patricia, and their children Adam and James) Pace, of Sonoma; Dr. Jonathan (and his wife Heidi, and their children Ethan and David) Pace, of Vermont; and Pamela (and her husband Ken Sheppard, and her children Mindy Falter and Mike Lonsford) Lonsford, of Tacoma, Washington. He is also survived by his sister Marjorie Covell, of Sonoma, as well as many nieces and nephews.

Friends are invited to attend a Memorial Service Saturday, September 22nd, 2001, at 11 a.m. at Duggan's Mission Chapel, 525 West Napa Street, Sonoma. Inurnment is private. Memorial contributions in Brice's honor may be made to the National Kidney Foundation of Northern California, 856 Stanton Road, Burlingame, CA 94010. Arrangements under the direction of Duggan's Mission Chapel.
