EPSTEIN, William David, 77, of Marin County, passed away September 12, 2001. Mt. Tamalpais Cemetery-Mortuary, San Rafael, 415-459-2500.

William David Epstein
Devoted husband, father, and grandfather, he died on September 12, 2001, five days before his 77th birthday. He was married for 46 years to Helga Voigt Epstein. A resident of Marin County for 43 years, Bill was a self-employed insurance and investment counselor, highly respected for his integrity. He was born in Nashville, Tennessee and graduated from Vanderbilt University, Phi Beta Kappa. Bill served as a radio officer in the United States Navy during and after World War II and was stationed in both Okinawa and Shanghai. He worked in news and sales in Nashville radio and television stations before moving to California in 1954.

Bill treasured the English language and especially loved poetry, novels, and going to the movies and live theatre. He could recite from memory Shakespeare sonnets, as well as many other poems he studied in college. An avid fan of jazz and classical music, Bill was a loyal patron of Marin Symphony for more than 40 years. He also was a lifelong student of world history and current political events. He was a gifted writer. His family and many friends benefited from his warm and generous spirit and his quick wit. Before his recent ill health, he enjoyed travel with his wife, tennis, and hiking. He volunteered for many years at Whistlestop in San Rafael, providing investment and tax advice to seniors.

Bill always put his family first. He is survived by his wife, Helga; his son, David Alexander Epstein and daughter-in-law, Rose Marie Sarfaty of Piedmont; his daughter, Andrea Rose Mehigan and son-in-law, Denis F. Mehigan of Lake Oswego, Oregon; his son, Robert Frederick Epstein and daughter-in-law, Lisa Soll of San Rafael; his beloved grandchildren Alex and Sarah Epstein; Will, Kelly Rose, and Matthew Mehigan; and Noah and Zoe Epstein; and his sister, Rose Tomlinson of Cincinnati, Ohio.

His many friends are invited to attend a tribute in his memory on Thursday, September 20, at 11:45 a.m. at the Livermore Room in the Marin Art & Garden Center, Ross. Bill's family prefers memorial contributions be made to MATRIX Parent Network and Resource Center, 94 Galli Drive, Novato, CA 94949 or Marin Symphony, 4340 Redwood Highway, Suite 409C, San Rafael, CA 94903.
