Death Summons Judge Rodden
Aged Jurist Expires Suddenly at His Home
Many Attend Funeral Services to Pay Last Tribute to the Well Known Pioneer
Justice of the Peace, George Rodden, a pioneer and for 25 years a prominent resident of San Rafael, died suddenly at his home on Fifth Street last Thursday evening, as the result of an apoplectic stroke. He was found shortly before 10 o'clock in a dying condition, and had passed away before medical assistance could be summoned. Up to the moment of his death he had enjoyed excellent health, and his sudden demise came as a great shock to his family and the community.
The funeral services which were held Sunday afternoon from his late residence, were attended by hosts of friends of the deceased. Rev. Wyllys Hall, officiated, and Mr. F. Elliott sang "Abide With Me" and "Lead Kindly Light." The pall bearers were Judge F.M. Angellotti, George L. Richardson, David Duncan, R.B. Strong, Frederick Carroll, and James Byrne. The interment took place in Mt. Tamalpais Cemetery.
Judge Rodden was 72 years of age. He was a native of Vermont, but came to California in 1857, engaging in mining in Tuolomne County. In 1877 he came to San Rafael, where he since resided. In 1890 he was elected Justice of the Peace, and served continually as such until his death. He had just been re-elected for another term. During his term of office he officiated at many weddings, having in act joined in wedlock more couples than any minister or official in the state. A widow and 3 children survive him, Mrs. L.R. Carrigan, Mrs. Harry Martin, and George F. Rodden.
