LARRY B. STEELMAN III
A memorial service for Larry B. Steelman III, an artist and longtime resident of Larkspur, will be held at 1 p.m. Saturday at St. Sebastian's Catholic Church in Kentfield.
He died unexpectedly Friday at Kaiser Hospital in Terra Linda.
He was born in Nevada, but had been reared in Oakland and Berkeley. He was 66.
Mr. Steelman painted California landscapes and seascapes from Fort Bragg to Big Sur.
At age 17, he won prizes for his works, which were exhibited at the World's Fair at Treasure Island in 1939.
Mr. Steelman served in the Navy in the South Pacific during World War II. After the war, he moved to Southern California.
He widely exhibited his paintings there and had many one-man shows. His works were represented in private collections there and across the nation.
After 20 years in Southern California, he returned to Northern California, where he lived in Larkspur for the last 20 to 25 years.
Mr. Steelman painted at home. Most of his work was done by commission.
He was past president of the Society of Western Artists in 1972 and 1973 and active on the group's board of directors and board of trustees.
He was elected to the executive board of the California State Fair Art Advisory Council in 1978.
Mr. Steelman also was a longtime member and usher at St. Sebastian's Catholic Church.
Survivors are his wife, Barbara Agee Steelman of Larkspur; and two brothers, Dan Steelman of Perris, Riverside County, and Bill Steelman of Concord.
Burial will be private.
The family prefers contributions to the American Cancer Society, the Society of Western Artist Memorial Fund, Marin Services For Women or to the Alano Club of San Rafael.
