PAUL HARTMAN Jr.
Third-generation Californian
Paul Hartman Jr. of Greenbrae, a Marin native and third generation Californian who worked in the travel business for over 30 years, died of a stroke Jan. 31. He was 81.
Mr. Hartman was born in San Rafael and attended Ross Grammar School. He graduated from Tamalpais High School in 1935 and from Stanford University with a degree in labor relations in 1940.
He established Paul Hartman Co. in San Francisco in 1945. In the mid-1950s, Mr. Hartman began a long career in the travel industry. He worked for Redwood Travel Advisors. Later, he became a partner with GTS Travel in San Rafael, and from 1978 to 1989 was partner and owner of Travel Advisors of Marin. He was a worldwide traveler and escorted groups, including the Giants Boosters and Rotarians, on international conferences.
He served in the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers from 1940 to 1945. He was a captain with the 43rd Engineers in the South Pacific.
His memberships included the Rotary Club of San Rafael, where he served as president in 1979; First Presbyterian Church, where he was a past deacon; and Sons in Retirement. He served on the board of directors of the YMCA and Rotary Manor, and he was a past member of the board of trustees for the Marin Art and Garden Center.
Mr. Hartman was a golfing member of the Meadow Club in Fairfax from 1945 to 1999.
He is survived by his wife of 53 years, Priscilla Hartman of San Rafael; two daughters, Judith Tipple of San Rafael and Jacalyn Foote of Arcata; one brother, Norbert G. Hartman of Stockton; and three grandchildren, Sarah Tipple, Rachel Foote and Adam Foote.
A memorial service will be 1:30 p.m. Friday at First Presbyterian Church, 1510 Fifth Ave., San Rafael.
