Gladys Kathryn Tomney
Passed away at the age of 103 years on August 21, 2001 in Winters, California after a very short illness. She lived independently to the end.
Gladys was born in New York City on January 19, 1898 and had the unique privilege of living throughout three Centuries. Prior to moving to California with her family in 1949, she was the secretary to the Director of Teachers College at Columbia University. She retired in Orange, California in 1963. She loved New York but attributed her long life to California.
She is survived by her daughter Jacqueline and husband Tony Avellar of Winters, California (formerly of Sausalito) and her son Edward and wife Marie Tomney of Rough and Ready, California. Gladys also had nine grandchildren, Edward and Michael Tomney of Rough and Ready; Mary Avellar Eaton of Corte Madera; Theresa Avellar Mariani and Thomas Avellar of Winters; Sarah Avellar Mathias of San Anselmo; Anthony Avellar of San Francisco; Margaret Avellar Biale of Corte Madera; and Andrew Avellar of Sonoma.
