Tunnel Caves In
The tunnel a mile south of Tomales on the line of the North Shore Railroad caved in on a work train at 11 o’clock last Thursday morning, resulting in two deaths and injury to four persons.
The work train started north on Thursday morning to inspect and make necessary repairs wherever required over the road, in charge of Engineer Ritchie. It was made up of the heavy steam shovel car, and a flat car following. In going through the tunnel, the heavy arm of the steam shovel caught in the roof of the tunnel and before the train could be stopped, a quantity of heavy timbers gave way, earth and rock commenced falling from the roof and soon that portion of the tunnel caved in.
Word was quickly sent to Tomales and Dr. J. Rochex and Dr. E.C. Winn were soon at the spot. Superintendent Shoemaker engineered a wrecking train from Sausalito. A large force of men was speedily at work to enable the resumption of traffic. The southbound passenger train from Cazadero was delayed a few hours, but at 7 o’clock p.m., the road was made trafficable. The two men, John J. DOLLIX and Mike KRISHTE are dead and the 4 injured men are being cared for at Tomales.
