DENISON, Millicent J., of San Rafael, passed away April 9, 2002. Neptune Society of Northern California, 707-525-9700.

Millicent J. Denison
Passed away April 9, 2002, at Manor Care Nursing Facility in Walnut Creek, California. She was 81 years old. A 54-year resident of San Rafael, Millicent was born on October 8, 1920 Moline, Illinois. With her family, she moved to Ontario, California. Always an excellent student, she graduated from Chaffey High School, Chaffey Junior College and went on to attend the University of California at Berkeley. There she earned a Bachelor of Science degree in Chemistry and Zoology. During World War II, Millie went to work as one of the first women chemists for California Research Corporation, an affiliate of Standard Oil Company. There she met and later married George H. Denison, a research chemist with California Research Corporation, who preceded her in death in 1993. Millie was very active in Marin County in many ways. She was a Blue Bird-Camp Fire Girls leader, Cub Scout Den Mother, PTA volunteer and Life Member, a long-time Guardian for Job's Daughters Bethel #48, and a member of Eastern Star. A volunteer for the American Cancer Society, she frequently drove cancer patients for their treatment, becoming a dear friend and source of support to many patients. She was a long-time and active member of The First Presbyterian Church of San Rafael. One of the first women Elders in the church, she was also the President of Presbyterian Women, a Sunday school teacher, and a member of pastor-seeking committees. Millie also worked at the Presbyterian Church thrift shop, Seek-and-Find, for many years. She is probably most well known and beloved for her work in the church kitchen, with her dear "crew of fellow cooks and bottle-washers." An excellent cook, with a cheerful sense of humor and great dedication, Millie and her friends prepared hundreds of meals, luncheons and buffets over the years. In addition to her volunteer work, Millie loved reading, sewing, traveling with her family, working crossword puzzles, gardening and cooking. Her family considers her the greatest cook, and family and friends gathered together frequently in the Denison kitchen as Millie prepared wonderful meals. She is survived by her daughter and son-in-law, Betsy and Dave Lester of Lafayette, by her son and daughter-in-law, Art and Antoinette Denison of Livermore, and by her sons David Denison, of San Rafael, and George Denison II of Daly City; her sister, Norma Woltman, her niece Linda Burnham, her nephew and his wife Doug and Cathy Woltman and her uncle, George Somes, all of San Diego. Millie has five grandchildren, Andrew Denison, Jessica Zerga, Diana Denison, Jean Kirshner and Natalie Lester. She also has eight great-grandchildren. She will be greatly missed by all her family. A Memorial Service to honor Millie Denison will be held Thursday, April 25, 2002, at 1:30 PM, at The First Presbyterian Church, 5th and E Streets, in San Rafael. The family requests that donations be sent to: American Cancer Society; 25 Bellam Blvd. Suite 150; San Rafael, CA 94901.
