Despondent Girl Commits Suicide
Lonely and despondent because she was far from those she loved, Miss Mamie Killian, 19 years of age, swallowed a quantity of carbolic acid last Sunday night and ended her life. The girl had been employed as a domestic by Mr. Martens of San Francisco who is temporarily residing at 115 H Street, San Rafael. She was a native of Ireland, and had been in this country for only a few months. The girl grieved for her mother, who is in Ireland, and it is supposed this caused her to seek death. Doctor Keck was called in when the family discovered the young lady's condition but the medical man arrived too late to stay the progress of the poison. Coroner Eden held an inquest Monday morning, the jury finding that Miss Killian came to her death as a result of taking carbolic acid with suicidal intent.
She had been here since June 2nd, and last Friday, not feeling well, she was allowed to go to San Francisco for a few day's vacation. She returned Sunday evening, apparently happy and well. She got the evening dinner for the family and while they were eating she went to her room, took the carbolic acid, and a few moments later was found on the bed moaning and suffering, but unconscious. She had received calls from a young man from the city a few times since being in San Rafael.
