Passing of William Jack
It was announced in the last issue of the News that the venerable William Jack was confined to his room at the residence of his son-in-law, Dr. Crumpton. The hope was expressed that he would soon be out on the streets again. But that was not to be, as he passed peacefully away last Saturday night. Although he had greatly improved in general health, weight and vigor since his return to California with Dr. Crumpton, he suffered with a chronic difficulty that was aggravated, perhaps, by a little cold taken the last day he was on the street, and with advanced age, it only took a few days to wear him out.
Although enjoying life and the society of surviving friends and relatives, yet the death of his wife created a void which nothing on this earth could fill, and he longed to join her in the life beyond. His remains have been forwarded to Beloit, WI, to be laid beside his wife, as he wished.
Deceased was born in the north of Ireland nearly 87 years ago. He came with his father early in life to Canada, and afterwards to the wilderness of Rock County, WI, where he secured a body of land, and with mostly is own labor, opened out a fine farm and delightful home. Some 50 years ago he came to California and for a long time was a miner with Dr. Crumpton, who afterwards married his eldest daughter. Later Mr. Jack returned to his farm in Wisconsin.
After the announcement of the illness and death of her mother, Mrs. Crumpton and daughter went home to her father and remained with him until he was ready to come to Sausalito with them, where he died. He has only one other child, a daughter Clara, who is the wife of Dr. John P. Webster of Chicago. The deceased was a quiet, courteous, unassuming man and greatly respected by all who knew him.
The funeral took place Tuesday and was numerously attended by friends of Sausalito, San Rafael, and elsewhere around the bay, from old Forrest Hill and far away Wisconsin.
