Colonel Shakespeare's Career is Ended
Quietly Passed Away After a Long Illness
Military Funeral Services Conducted
from Presbyterian Church

The earthly career of Colonel Stephen Shakespeare is ended. He quietly passed to the other world last Friday night, or rather, early Saturday morning at the age of 67 years. He had been sick for about three months, suffering from pneumonia, and was reported to be getting along nicely, but he had a relapse, and the immediate cause of his death was probably fatty degeneration of the heart.

The Colonel was one of the best known and most respected men in San Rafael. He was quiet, unassuming, upright in his daily walks, and was ever ready to help his fellow beings. He was a resident of San Rafael and an instructor in Mr. Tamalpais academy for 11 years, part of the time teaching classes in the high school also.

The funeral which took place from the First Presbyterian Church Monday afternoon was a strictly military service. Dr. Arthur Crosby, headmaster of the academy in which the Colonel was an instructor, delivered the address and eloquently spoke of the many virtues of the dead soldier, dwelling upon his manly character and true worth as a man.

From the church the casket was taken to Mt. Tamalpais Cemetery on a caisson drawn by 4 horses, and draped in the flag of his country, there being many floral pieces to tell the love and respect of his friends. The escort consisted of academy cadets, a bugler sounded taps, and a firing squad of cadets fired a salute over the grave.
