Geo. S. Smith
Marin’s First Born, Dies at 75 Years

Believed to have been the oldest person born in Marin county, George S. Smith, wealthy resident and property owner of Sausalito, passed away yesterday at his home there at the age of seventy-five years.

Smith was born in a little cottage which still stands in the hills above the home of William Kent in Kentfield. Later, it is said, he attended school in the same building.

In his early youth and before the railroad was built from Sausalito north, he carried the San Francisco papers from Sausalito to San Rafael making the trip between midnight and morning in a horse-drawn cart.

Smith acquired considerable property in Sausalito in the early days, and the growth of the town, with the increase in property values, brought a small fortune to the deceased. He was the owner of a garage near the ferry building, and his estate includes considerable valuable business property across from the Golden Gate Ferry.

The funeral services will be held at Star of the Sea church tomorrow morning at 10 o’clock, with burial in Fernwood cemetery, under the direction of the Sawyer Company.

The deceased was a brother of the late William, James and Tillie Smith.
