The Belvedere Tragedy

The tragic fate of Mr. T. J. Kelly and Miss Bessie Warren has cast a gloom over Belvedere. They started for a sail in a small boat last Sunday afternoon and disappeared as if the waters had opened and swallowed them up. There is no doubt now that the unfortunate young people have been the victims of those catastrophes so common in navigating the bay in small crafts. Probably a sudden gust of wind caught them unawares and capsized their boat, which being heavily weighted with fixed ballast, went to the bottom directly. Every effort to find at least the remains of the deceased has been made, but as yet the only token of their doom has been an oar picked up on the bay, which is believed to have belonged to the ill fated boat.

The body of T. J. Kelly, one of the victims of the late tragedy at Belvedere, was found in the upper part of San Pablo Bay last Wednesday by a fisherman. It was fully identified by relatives. The body of Miss Warren has not been recovered, but a fur cape belonging to her was picked up on the San Pablo shore, a mute witness to her sad fate.
