GEORGE MEFFORD
George W. Mefford, 89, a part-time resident of Marin County for the past five years and father of Mrs. Evelyn Weitzel of 14 Canyon Road, Fairfax, died yesterday in a local rest home after a long illness.
Mefford, a retired engineer for a sugar refinery, was born in Keokuk, Iowa, and came to San Francisco in 1906 at the height of the fire which destroyed much of the city. He met his wife while working to assist survivors of the disaster.
Mrs. Weitzel is the wife of Ted Weitzel, owner of the Lady Baltimore bakery.
Other survivors are a granddaughter in Champlaine, Ill., and two grandchildren in Marin County.
A Rosary will be recited at 7:30 p.m. tomorrow at Chapel of the Hills, San Anselmo. A Requiem High Mass will be celebrated at 10 a.m. Friday at St. Rita’s Church, Fairfax, followed by burial in Holy Cross Cemetery, Colma. The funeral cortege will assemble at Chapel of the Hills at 9:30 a.m. Friday.

A Death Notice in the same paper adds that he was the husband of the late Mary L. Mefford, father of the late Jessie D. Mefford, and grandfather of Mrs. Marlene Hartung of Champlaine, Ill., Mrs. Theolyn Harper of San Rafael and Kathleen Weitzel of Fairfax.
