AARON SCHWARTZ
Aaron Schwartz, a longtime San Rafael merchant and one of the founders of Congregation Rodef Sholom in San Rafael, died today in Marin General Hospital after suffering a heart attack.
He was 76.
Mr. Schwartz was born in Poland. He and his family escaped from that country in the early 1900s. The family moved to San Rafael in 1928.
Mr. Schwartz spent most of the rest of his life in San Rafael. He moved to Novato four years ago.
Mrs. Schwartz devoted much of his time to Schwartz Bros., the men’s clothing store owned by his family in San Rafael. He retired several years ago.
Mr. Schwartz, as a founding member of the San Rafael Jewish community, led the San Francisco Mounted Sheriff’s Posse as it crossed the Golden Gate Bridge during opening ceremonies.
He was a past president of the Marin B’nai Brith and a found of the Marin Jewish Community Center.
He is survived by a daughter, Joan Schwartz of Novato; a brother, Carl Schwartz of San Rafael; and a sister, Rose Scheiner of San Rafael.
The family prefers memorial donations to the Sylvia Schwartz Hessed Fund, c/o Congregation Rodef Sholom, 170 N. San Pedro Road, San Rafael, Calif.
