Carl G. Wehrli, 77, former city councilman

Carl G. Wehrli, San Rafael’s oldest former city councilman, died yesterday in a local hospital after a lengthy illness. He was 77.

Wehrli served on the council from 1924 through 1929 and was instrumental in beginning the municipal street paving and lighting programs through assessment districts. His wife, Bernice Cochrane Wehrli who survives him, was the first woman employee hired by the San Rafael Police Department, working there from 1934 through 1960.

Wehrli retired in 1971 after a long business career, first as an automobile dealer and later as owner of a service station supplies firm. He formerly was active in Masonic organizations.

Wehrli was born in San Francisco, then moved to San Rafael in 1906 after the earthquake and fire.

He and his wife celebrated their 52nd wedding anniversary last July, and Wehrli was honored by the San Rafael Bicentennial Committee for his civic activities.

He also is survived by a son, Carl G. Wehrli Jr., former Lucas Valley resident now living in Mission Viejo, and two grandchildren.

The funeral will be at 11 a.m. tomorrow in Keaton’s Mortuary, San Rafael, followed by burial in Mount Olivet Cemetery.
