Death Claims This Pioneer

Death claimed another old and respected resident of this county when Thomas Bassett died at his home in Tomales last Friday. He had been ill only three days from an attack of pneumonia.

Deceased was a native of Glanmorganshire, Wales, aged 61 years. He came to this state and locality in May 1869. He came here with Daniel Davis. He was first employed on the Capt. Allen Ranch in Chileno Valley west of this city, and in August of the same year, went to Tomales. He worked there for G. W. Burbank, brother of Luther Burbank, for 9 years, then bought the ranch near Tomales which he held and managed until his death.

In 1877 he married Miss Mary Bailey, a daughter of the late Robert Bailey, who now survives him. The three children surviving are Hattie Winn, wife of the late Dr. Winn of Tomales, Robert H., and Ralph Bassett. Brothers of the deceased are David and William Bassett and uncle of M. D. Bassett, all of Tomales.

Mr. Bassett was a man of splendid integrity and was regarded as one of Northern Marin’s most substantial citizens. His death has been a loss to the community as well as the grief stricken family.

The funeral took place in Tomales on Monday, the Rev. Fisher officiating. The interment followed in the churchyard at that place.
