Mansueto L. Dell’Era

Mansueto “Manny” L. Dell’Era, one of San Rafael’s early electricians, died Wednesday at his San Rafael home. He was 83.

A native of Dori on Lake Como, Italy, he came to the United States in 1912 and settled in Larkspur where his father had preceeded them.

Dell’Era went to work for an electrical shop in San Rafael when he was a teenager still struggling with the English language. He worked as a master electrician for Northwestern Pacific Railroad from 1922 to 1936.

In 1936, the same day the Golden Gate Bridge was opened to automobiles, he opened his own business, Dell’Era Electric in San Rafael.

Except for an interruption during World War II, when he was a maintenance engineer for the Army Engineers at the San Francisco Presidio, he did electrical work throughout Marin until his retirement in 1971.

He also served as chief electrician at San Quentin State Prison for a brief time after the war.

He is survived by two sons, Aldo Dell’Era of San Rafael and Roger Dell’Era of Novato; a sister, Louise Wedberg of Nebraska; seven brothers, Plinio Dell’Era of San Rafael, Angelo Dell’Era of San Francisco, Reno Dell’Era of San Rafael, Butch Dell’Era of San Rafael, Ben Dell’Era of Novato, Jordan Dell’Era of Cotati, and Bono Dell’Era of San Rafael; and six grandchildren.

A funeral will be held at 1 p.m. Friday at the Chapel of the Hills, 330 Redhill Ave., San Anselmo. Entombment will follow at Mount Tamalpais Cemetery in San Rafael.

Friends may call at Chapel of the Hills after 10 a.m. Friday.

The family prefers contributions to Marin Aid to Retarded Children.
