Walter Bartnett Dies in New York
Walter J. Bartnett, former Marin resident, and indicted official of the old California Safe Deposit & Trust Co., which collapsed in 1907 in San Francisco, died at his New York home last Monday at the age of 78.
Barnett’s home was on Bartnett Island, at the northern end of the Redwood Hiway Bridge at the head of Richardson Bay. In 1907 it was reached by boat and a long footbridge. The home was burned to the ground some years after the Bartnetts left for New York.
One of the officers of the defunct bank served 18 months in San Quentin. Bartnett’s conviction was reversed and he was given his freedom, and the $12,000,000 of depositors’ money found its way into the pockets of receivers, etc. Depositors, many of whom were Marin residents, collected 14 cents on the dollar.
