Marie Frances Irwin

Marie Frances Irwin, longtime Marin resident and member of an early day San Rafael family, died yesterday in a local hospital after a brief illness. She was 66.

Mrs. Irwin was born in Watsonville but returned to San Rafael with her family when she was a baby. She attended the old B Street School, San Rafael High School and the College of Marin. She also was a graduate of San Francisco State College.

Her grandfather, Louis Peter, built the building that still stands at the corner of Fourth and C streets in San Rafael for his dry goods business, opening it in 1893. Mrs. Irwin worked in the business as a young girl and after college, she taught mentally retarded children in San Francisco for a number of years.

She made her home virtually all her life at 1000 C Street, first in the old house behind the Peter Building, which she owned, and later in a modern building housing apartments and shops.

Mrs. Irwin was active in the Marin Historical Society and a long list of lodges and organizations including the Eastern Star and Rebekahs.

She is survived by two daughters, Suzanne Irwin of San Rafael and Nancy Irwin Lang of Chico; two grandchildren, and her sister, Martha Waters of San Francisco.

Mrs. Irwin’s aunt, Marie Peter, is San Rafael’s oldest living native at 97.

Funeral will be at 1 p.m. Monday at Keaton’s Mortuary in San Rafael.

Burial will be in Mount Tamalpais Cemetery.
