Maxine R. Cantrell
Bridge expert, teacher

Maxine E. Cantrell of San Rafael, a longtime bridge teacher in Marin, died Sunday, Sept. 2, 1990, at University of California Medical Center in San Francisco from complications following surgery. She was 66.

Mrs. Cantrell was born in Missouri and first moved to San Francisco during World War II. She had lived 30 years in Marin County.

She was a teacher by training and also worked as a reading specialist. Mrs. Cantrell learned to play duplicate bridge, and was able to combine both interests by teaching the game professionally.

She became a life master and was an accredited bridge teacher and director. Over the years, she introduced hundreds of Marin residents to bridge, teaching the intricacies of the game for maximum enjoyment.

Mrs. Cantrell owned the former Sam Rafael Bridge Studio on West End Avenue for 12 years. She was a past president of Marin County American Contract Bridge Association.

She traveled extensively playing in and directing bridge tournaments.

In recent years, she enjoyed life as a vagabond, house-sitting at many homes in Marin on a free-lance basis. She started by house-sitting for some of her bridge playing friends and it advanced into a new career for her.

Mrs. Cantrell also worked part time for a pet-sitting service in San Rafael.

She is survived by two daughters, Evalee R. Nelson of Burney in Shasta County and Carol Farrand of San Rafael; a sister, Margaret Parker of Missouri; a brother, Harry Edde of Los Angeles; and two granddaughters.

A memorial service will be at 2:30 p.m. Friday at Chapel of the Hills in San Anselmo.

The family prefers that memorial contributions be made to a favorite charity or the American Diabetes Association.
