Teamster Killed

While driving a wagon loaded with sixty sacks of coal for the State Highway, near Manzanita, Jas. Hamilton Allen, a teamster for the contracting company fell from his seat and met death at the heels of the horses.

A child of six was the only witness of the accident. According to his story the wagon was coming down hill by the railroad shops at a time estimated to be about 10:30 when the team started to run away. The road is rough in places, and it was perhaps in striking a ridge that the teamster was hurled from his seat. An impact, evidently from the hoofs of the horses, fractured the man’s skull, following which the wagon passed over him crushing his legs. Death was instaneous.

Coroner Sawyer took charge of the body, which was buried in the Fernwood Cemetery, Sausalito, Sunday.

Allen was fifty-two years of age, born in Mariposa County, single, and had lived here about five years.
