Sausalito Writer Ends Own Life; Illness Cause
Funeral services for Frank Challoner Ames, 29, Sausalito writer who killed himself Saturday in Golden Gate Park, San Francisco, were held Tuesday in San Francisco.
That Ames had been despondent on account of illness and having been “blacklisted” by ship concerns because of a magazine article, is the belief of friends. Ames is said to have written an article attacking a shipping company’s treatment of the families of a group of Filipinos who lost their lives in a ship collision in the Philippine Islands, according to Maynard Shipley, a friend, Sausalito scientist and writer. Ames was also a friend and protégé of Frederick O’Brien of Sausalito, well known author.
Ames is survived by his parents, Mr. and Mrs. E. O. F. Ames, one sister, Kathleen and four brothers, Arthur, Arnold, Roland and Ernest Ames. He was a native of England.
