John Matarangas
Master yachtsman
John Matarangas, a master yachtsman, died in his Mill Valley home of liver cancer Feb. 12. He was 67.
Mr. Matarangas graduated from Lincoln High School in 1951, from the University of California in 1955 and served at sea in the Coast Guard during the Korean War. For over 30 years he operated an industrial supply company in San Francisco.
He was a member of the Olympic Club. He was a 50-year member of the St. Francis Yacht Club.
He was a talented sailor who participated in many major yacht races.
Mr. Matarangas owned three racing sailing yachts and together with his brother, Dan, won many races and season championships in San Francisco Bay.
He was a knight commander in the International Order of St. Hubertus and enjoyed fly fishing and traveling the world with his wife, Betty. He also loved to play dominoes.
He is survived by his mother, Demetria Matarangas of San Francisco, and brother Dan Matarangas of Hollister.
The family is planning a private ceremony.
Memorial contributions may be made in lieu of flowers to the Hospice of Marin or the Junior Sailing Program, care of the St. Francis Yacht Club.

A Death Notice was published in the San Francisco Chronicle on Thursday, Feb. 17, Section D, page 2. It notes that Mr. Matarangas was a native of San Francisco. Russell & Gooch Funeral Chapel was in charge of arrangements.
