Woman Falls From Cliff at Beach; Drowns
Body of Mrs. Wickizer Is Found in Shore Declivity
DRAMATIC CRITIC
Following a two-day search for Katherine Hill Wickizer, 33, former dramatic critic, employed on the San Francisco Chronicle, by sheriff’s deputies and CCC camp workers, her dead body was found in a cave on the side of a cliff near Stinson Beach. She had apparently fallen from a cliff overlooking the ocean, and drowned. High tides and waves had washed the body into the cliff-side hole.
Deputy Coroner Harry Williams, brought the body to San Rafael, to the Keaton and Dusel funeral parlors, and it was later taken to San Francisco.
The body was found by two members of the CCC camp.
Sheriff Walter B. Sellmer, and Undersheriff Frank Kelly, spent most of Monday leading a group of searchers through the beach area.
Mrs. Wickizer, wife of James Wickizer of the San Francisco Bureau of United Press, accompanied by Mrs. Helen Hill Helgesen, and the latter’s 6-year-old daughter, Caroline, 6, were occupying a cottage at Sea Downs. Sunday morning Mrs. Wickizer, stating that she wanted to “see the village” left for a stroll along the nearby coast. Her sister and friends became alarmed when Mrs. Wickizer failed to arrive at home, and the officers were notified.
Mrs. Wickizer had been in ill health since the birth of her child seven months ago, and was on sick leave from the Chronicle. She lived with her mother, Mrs. Helen Bidwell Hill, 2317? Baker Street.
The Chronicle says of Mrs. Wickizer:
“She started her journalistic career more than a decade ago when she became associated with the Chronicle. Her brilliant work as a dramatic critic soon attracted wide attention, not only in San Francisco but throughout the country.
“Her writing for college publications won her praise while she was a student at the University of California. Before entering college, she attended the Oakland public schools.”
