Ernest Probert Dies While In Australia
Ernest Probert, well-known retired engineer and realtor in Marin, died suddenly Friday from a heart attack in Australia where he was visiting his sister, their first meeting in 47 years. He was 75.
A native of London, Probert came to the United States in 1909 and to Marin in 1943. During World War II he worked as engineer, putting up power plants in Alaska for the Army and later for Marinship in Sausalito. Probert operated a real estate agency in Larkspur for six years before moving to Inverness Park to retire. His wife died about two years ago.
He left Marin in January and in March reached Newcastle, Australia, where he was visiting with his sister, Olive Stanley. He leaves a son, Hil Probert, who operated Hil Probert Motors in Larkspur. Another son, Alan Probert, is in Washington D.C. as mining engineer with the U.S. Bureau of Mines.
Probert was a member of the Marin Chorale Society and the Episcopal Church in Inverness.
Funeral services will be held in Australia Tuesday, followed by cremation there.
By coincidence, Probert’s pet Boston terrier named Pat ran out into a street in Larkspur and died on the same day. Hil, who was taking care of the dog during his father’s trip to Australia, stated that the terrier just ran out into the street for no apparent reason as if deliberately.
