First white child born in San Rafael

Petaluma - Death yesterday claimed Mrs. Mary Jane Sales, first white child born in San Rafael, and a member of one of the most widely known pioneer families in Sonoma County. Mrs. Sales, who was 83, succumbed at her home in Bodega Ave. after 3 days illness.

Mrs. Sales was the mother of W.L. Sales, former mayor of Petaluma, and had resided in this section for 77 years. She was the daughter of the late William and Lucy May Bryant, Marin County pioneers. She was born January 28, 1847. When she was 3 years old, Mrs. Sales accompanied her mother on a visit to Missouri by way of the Isthmus of Panama. The mother and daughter returned to California in 1851, making the trip across the plains.

In 1862, she married John Sales, pioneer and former Supervisor of Sonoma County, who died in 1924, after they had been married 63 years.

She is survived by 3 sons; W.L. Sales, J.E. Sales of San Anselmo, and J. Roscoe Sales of Lakeport; and 2 daughters, Mrs. T.G. Gling, and Mrs. G.W. Gaston of Petaluma.

Mrs. Sales was the sister of J.E. Bryant of Geyersville and William H. Bryant of Dry Creek Valley.
