Death of Mrs. Maria L. Lucas

The sad news of the death of Mrs. Maria L. Lucas reached this city from Bolinas on Saturday last and caused a gloom to overshadow the community. Mrs. Lucas was the oldest pioneer woman in this county and for the past few months has been living at her summer home at Bolinas.

Mrs. Lucas, who was Miss Maria Swetman, was born in Wexford, Ireland, 82 years ago. She was married in May 1855 to the late John Lucas. Shortly after Mr. Lucas brought his bride to California via Panama. The Lucas family came into the estate of Don Timothy Murphy, who was an uncle of Mr. Lucas. The estate contained many thousands of acres of Marin County’s richest land lying north of San Rafael.

Mrs. Lucas was distinguished for her great benevolence and charity to the church and the poor. She was beloved by all who knew her and will be missed from the community as a good guiding angel.

The deceased was the mother of Mrs. P. J. Cadogan, Maria L., Henry J, John Edmund, and the late Katherine Lucas. The funeral was held from the family residence, Tuesday morning, thence to St. Raphael’s Church where a requiem mass was said for the repose of her soul by Rev. Father Phillips. The remains were followed by sorrowful relatives and friends to Mt. Olivet Cemetery where they were laid gently to rest. Rev. Father Valentini of Sausalito paid the deceased many glowing compliments in his eulogy.
