Marin General Hospital in Greenbrae, CA, December 12, 2001, born in Grants Pass, OR, resident of Sausalito at age 47. Much loved by her parents, Mary B. Mikkelson and the late Dr. V.E. Mikkelson, Hayward, CA; sisters, Martha Yee, Los Angeles; Kathleen Mikkelson, San Anselmo, CA; Kristin Mikkelson-Jonsson, Mellerud, Sweden; Laura Moore, Atlanta, GA; and Holly Mikkelson, Spreckels, CA; uncles, David Binder, Chevy Chase, MD and James E. Mikkelson, Charlotte, NC; nine nieces and nephews, one great nephew, fourteen cousins, her former husband, Steve Leland, and countless friends. Alex (named Phyllis at birth) was an executive assistant in the S.F. office of the law firm of Latham and Watkins, where she was known for her quick wit, often expressed in phone and e-mail messages, as well as for her generosity, compassion, and commitment to social justice. She was a graduate of Hayward High School and attended U.C. Berkeley. The family held a private service, December 15, 2001. A celebration of her life will occur at 2 p.m., January 26, 2002, at the First Unitarian Church, 1187 Franklin Ave., San Francisco, to be followed by a reception at the Cathedral Hill Hotel, one block from the church, at 1101 Van Ness Ave. The family suggests in lieu of flowers, a donation to the charity of choice, or to St. Anthony Foundation, 121 Golden Gate Ave., S.F. 94102; Little Brothers--Friends of the Elderly, 1150 Bush St., 3rd Floor, S.F. 94109; Glide Memorial, 330 Ellis St., S.F. 94102; or Southern Poverty Law Center, 400 Washington Ave., Montgomery, AL 36104.
