Sterling Hendricks

Novato – Sterling B. Hendricks, 78, of Silver Springs, Md., a nationally known biochemist, died unexpectedly Sunday at a local hospital while on a visit to his daughter, Martha O’Neill of Novato.

Hendricks was a scientist with the U.S. Department of Agriculture and was well known for his pioneer research in photoperiodism in flowering plants.

He was a member of the National Academy of Sciences and in 1975 was awarded the National Medal of Science from President Gerald Ford.

At the time of his death, he was a member of the Research and Exploration Committee of the National Geographic Society.

He was born in Texas and spent his career years in Maryland.

In addition to his daughter, he is survived by his wife, Edith, and two grandchildren.

A private service has been held.
