FLORENCE E. HUGHES
Florence Elizabeth Hughes of San Anselmo died Thursday, Feb. 22, 1990, at Rafael Convalescent Hospital after a long illness. She was 84.
She was born in Summerfield, Kan., and graduated from the University of Nebraska. She later moved to Berkeley, where she took graduate courses at the University of San Francisco and the University of California. She lived in California for more that 53 years, the last 37 in San Anselmo.
In California, she worked for many years as a public employee on both the state and federal level, including serving as budget officer of the budget for the 28th Air Force Division at Hamilton Air Force Base.
As a teacher, she taught in Kansas and Nebraska, and later at Munson's Business College and the John Adams Adult School, both in San Francisco.
She retired in 1970. She served three years as the president of the Retired Public Employees Association of Marin County, Chapte 10. Over the years, she also belonged to The Whistlestoppers, the Goldenaires, Retired Federal Employees, California Retired Teachers Association, Marin Division California Teachers, the American Association of Retired People, Catholic Daughters and the 3G's of St. Anselm's.
Survivors include three sisters, Stella M. Hughes of San Anselmo, Harriet Wright of Summerfield, Kan., Geneva Oehm of Summerfield, Kan.; a brother, John P. Hughes of Stockton; two nieces and a nephew.
The funeral and burial will be in Summerfield, Kan. A memorial service will be held later at Saint Anselm's Church.
Memorial donations are preferred to a favorite charity.
Arrangements were by Keaton's Mortuary of San Rafael.
