BROUGHAM, Barrett - Artist, sculptor, world traveler, long-time San Francisco and Marin County resident, died in Petaluma May 20, 2002 after a lengthy illness. Born in Seattle, WA, February 19, 1916, she attended Broadway High School and the University of Washington in Seattle. In 1937, Barrett moved to California to pursue her art career. In 1942, she enrolled in flight training to qualify for the Women Airforce Service Pilots (WASPS). When that option closed, she served as a U.S. Marine Corps civilian truck driver in moving military supplies for troops waging war in the Pacific. At wars end, she resumed her career as sculptor in mediums of wood, plastics, metals and glass. She studied her craft in Florence, Italy, as a Fulbright Scholar. Later, she taught sculpturing skills to students in Scotland. Barrett was a vocalist and pianist. She worked extensively with Victor Ries, noted sculptor and jewelry craftsman. She is survived by her brothers Robert Brougham of Petaluma and Dr. David Brougham of Singapore; sister Dr. Doris Brougham of Taipei, Taiwan; and a number of nieces and nephews. A private commemorative gathering will be scheduled at a later date. Those desiring to do so may make a memorial contribution to the Alzheimer's Association.
