ORVILLE ELLIS
Retired CHP official
Orville “Ace” Ellis, retired assistant chief of the California Highway patrol, died Saturday, Feb. 13, 1993, in Greenbrae after a short illness. He was 86.
Mr. Ellis was born in Wayne County, Ill., and moved to Santa Barbara with his family in 1923, graduating from Santa Barbara High School in 1925. He went on to attend the University of Southern California.
In 1930, nine months after the Highway Patrol was created, he joined as a traffic officer. His career spanned more than 38 years and he rose through the ranks to inspector, retiring in 1968.
Besides Santa Barbara, he also was based in Los Angeles, Bakersfield and Fresno. Before retiring, he was the deputy commander in Fresno, a position that encompassed an area from Monterey to the Los Angeles County line.
He served on the Santa Barbara County Civil Service Commission.
Mr. Ellis was a member of the Masonic Lodge in Santa Barbara for 60 years. He also belonged to the Scottish Rite Bodies of Santa Barbara and the Al Malaika Shrine of Los Angeles.
In 1978, his wife, Adra Torrison, whom he married in 1930, died.
He moved to San Rafael in 1991.
He is survived by three sons, Arlen Ellis of Sausalito, Loren and Gregory Ellis, both of New Jersey; six grandchildren and seven great-grandchildren.
A service is set for 11 a.m. today at Keaton’s Mortuary in San Rafael.
His ashes will be scattered at sea.
His family suggests memorial donations to a favorite charity.
