Grant Lindsey Mitchell

Passed away peacefully at his home in Novato on April 28, 2002. Born in 1929 in Portland, Maine, Grant was the only child of Lena Phillips Martin and Byron E. Mitchell. Grant graduated from the Maine Maritime Academy in 1952 and served as an officer in the Merchant Marines for several years before joining the United States Navy. After an eighteen-year tour of duty he retired as a Lieutenant Commander while stationed at Treasure Island. Grant was a Brother in good standing with the Fairfax Lodge of the Masons of California and a member of the San Francisco Shriners. He was also a dedicated member of the Sierra Club and enjoyed world travel, cooking and the fine arts. His wife Carol Elizabeth Mitchell preceded him in death. Grant is survived by his loving family: daughters Carol Lee Olney and Diane Lynn Haxton, sons Glen Lindsey and Richard Dana Mitchell and grandchildren Tyler, Alison and Rebecca Mitchell. At his request, his ashes will be scattered at sea. A private Family Service is planned. Contributions in his name may be made to the National Multiple Sclerosis Society.
