Gertrude Forster dies; 63-year Fairfax resident
Gertrude Mae Forster, who lived in Fairfax for 63 years and was a homemaker and talented decorations designer, died Wednesday after a lengthy illness. Mrs. Forster was 87.
Born in Oakland, she moved to Fairfax in 1930. In 1968 she was elected charter president of the Bargain Box Auxiliary, which sells merchandise for the benefit of Sunny Hills Home for Children in San Anselmo.
A gardener and woodcarver, she liked to design and make colorful miniature decorations, such as wall hangings, table centerpieces, sleighs and rocking horses. Her talent earned her the nickname “Mrs. Santa Claus” among friends. She started making such items as a child and as an adult had customers all over the world, from Europe to the Philippines.
Mrs. Forster also was a past president of the Decorations Guild of the Marin Art and Garden Center.
Her husband, Raymond P. Forster, died in 1966. She is survived by three sons: Raymond Forster Jr. of Woodacre, Jack Forster of Corte Madera and Thomas Forster of Orland, Glenn County. She is also survived by a sister, Jane Moore of Lafayette; a brother, William Thaler of Twain Harte; 12 grandchildren; and 10 great-grandchildren.
A memorial service will be at 11 a.m. Tuesday at Chapel of the Hills, 330 Red Hill Road, San Anselmo.
The family prefers memorial contributions to Bargain Box Auxiliary of the Sunny Hills Bargain Box, 508 Irwin St., San Rafael 94901, or a favorite charity.
