JAMES BEHR

James Howell Behr, former Marin county businessman and brother of state Senator Peter Behr, died yesterday in a San Francisco hospital after a long illness. He was 55.

Sen. Behr of Tiburon announced his brother’s death of lung cancer to a quiet Senate gathering yesterday. He then asked for passage of a bill that would launch a $7 million anti-smoking campaign. The bill passed 27 to 10. It would add two cents on a pack of cigarettes to pay for advertising linking smoking to ill health.

Behr was born and reared in New York City. He served in the Air Force in the Pacific Theater during World War II. In 1950 he moved to Marin County, making his home in Mill Valley.

He was in the insurance business and later worked for General Dynamics. When he retired in 1972, he was the owner of Outdoor Recreation, a retail sporting good store in San Rafael.

He is survived by his wife, Patricia of the family home in Napa; three daughters, Deborah of Napa, Wendy B. O’Keefe of San Rafael and Nancy Dykes of San Francisco; a son, Timothy Behr of Hanover, N.H.; another brother, Karl Behr of Princeton, N.J.; a sister, Sally Pettit of Wilmington, Del., and two grandchildren.

Funeral will be at 11 a.m. Thursday at Treadway and Wigger Funeral Chapel in Napa. Inurnment will be at Tulocay Cemetery in Napa.
