Robert Drummond Is Found Dead

The body of a 26-year-old Corte Madera man, a bullet wound in the left side of his head, was found west of Novato yesterday near the Marshall-Petaluma road.

The Marin County coroner’s office said Robert E. Drummond of 1595 Redwood Highway, Apartment 5, was found 40 yards from his parked Volkswagen on the Marshall-Petaluma road, two miles west of Wilson Hill Road.

A coroner’s deputy said Drummond apparently had shot himself with a .357 caliber revolver. No note was found.

Drummond, who worked for Pacific Telephone and Telegraph Co., had been missing since Thursday.

His brother, William Drummond of Hillsborough, Ore., had a pilot search West Marin roads from the air looking for the yellow Volkswagon, and it was spotted yesterday afternoon.

The coroner’s deputy said the dead man apparently was fond of target shooting in West Marin and his brother feared he might have accidentally shot himself or been involved in an auto accident.

The pilot of the plane first radioed Sonoma County authorities, who flew by helicopter to the site, which is in Marin.

Marin County officials were then notified and with Drummond’s brother found the body. The pistol was under the body, the coroner’s deputy said.

Funeral arrangements were pending at Redwood Chapel Mortuary in Novato.
