CUMMINS, Charles Hayward, - UC Berkeley graduate and long time Piedmont resident died on April 1, 2002 in Orinda at the age of 92. He was married to the former Clara Forsterer on Sept. 7, 1935 and they were very happily wed for 61 years until her death in 1996. He is survived by his daughters Sarah Siegel and her husband Laurie of Orinda and Anne Heilman and her husband Larry of Chevy Chase, MD. and grandchildren Marney Solle and her husband Chris of Ross, Austin Babcock and his wife Kathy of McLean, VA., Carlos Heilman and his wife Laura of San Francisco and Elin Heilman of Brooklyn, NY. He was deeply loved and admired by all. Chuck was born on June 21, l909 in Conneaut, OH. He moved to Ontario, CA. as a teenager. The summer after graduating from Chaffee Union High School and also after his freshman year at the University of Washington he worked as a deck hand visiting ports in Latin America and Asia. He was an active member of Sigma Alpha Epsilon Fraternity. As a Junior he transferred to Cal, graduating in 1932 and joined C & H Sugar Co. where he had a long career in San Francisco. In 1943 he enlisted in the Navy and served as a Communications Officer in the Pacific on the USS Minneapolis, Salt Lake City and Chester in engagements at Wake Island, Tarawa, the Marshall Is., Saipan, Tinian, Leyte Gulf, Iwo Jima, Okinawa, the Philippine Sea and Shanghai. He received the Bronze Star with combat "V" and nine battle stars, retiring from the Naval Reserve in 1955 as a Commander. After retiring from C & H he became a real estate broker in Oakland. For many years he crewed small crafts in the SF Bay, continuing his love of the sea. With his extensive knowledge and lifelong fascination with medieval armor, he traveled several times to visit collections in England and France. A private family memorial is planned.
