Donald E. Engels
Concrete executive

A memorial service for Donald Edward Engels, an executive in the concrete industry and longtime San Anselmo resident, will be held Thursday night at Chapel of the hills mortuary in San Anselmo.

Mr. Engels died of heart failure on Nov. 22 at Marin General Hospital. He was 68.

He was born in Los Angeles and moved with his family to San Francisco when he was young.

In 1945, he graduated from George Washington High School in San Francisco and jointed the Air Force.

During World War II, he served as a weatherman and was stationed in the Philippines.

After the war, Mr. Engels attended the University of San Francisco. He graduated in 1951 with a business degree.

He worked for Lone Star Industries, a cement and construction materials company, for many years and was made manager of its Northern California division before joining the Aggregate and Concrete Association.

At the time of his death, he was the group’s vice president.

Mr. Engels was also a trustee on a number of boards, among them the Western Conference of Teamsters pension Trust, the International Foundation and Supplemental Income Pension.

He was a member of the World Trade Club and the Commonwealth Club.

Mr. Engels moved to San Anselmo in 1963.

His hobbies included woodworking, gardening and traveling abroad.

His survivors include his wife, Bette Engels; a daughter, Sue Engels Ream of Fairfax; and a son, Jeffrey E. Engels of Fairfax.

The memorial service will begin at 7:30 p.m.
