F. Delano Dean

Passed peacefully at home in Mill Valley. He was born in Pasadena, CA. As a youth he participated in Pasadena Christian Methodist Episcopal, athletics and a variety of social clubs. By the age of 14 he was producing shows in local community centers. Jazz was his thing and sharing it became his mission. Delano graduated from Pasadena City College and went on to play basketball in Europe for the U. S. Army.
In 1963 he moved to San Francisco. He was an avid jazz connoisseur, a gigginí bass player and co-owner of the notorious iBoth/Andi Jazz Club in San Francisco. He booked jazz acts for the Harding Theatre and the Jazz Workshop. Delano studied music at Sonoma State University and booked cultural events at the College of Marin. He originated the Marin City Arts Program and established and co-directed the Marin City Community Festival. In 2000 he retired from the U.S. Postal Service.
He was preceded in death by his parents, Howard and Mosetta Dean, brothers Edison, Thurman and Norman and sisters Vada Dean and Vida Sharp. He is survived by many friends and his children: Todd F. Dean of Pasadena, Olatunji T. T. Dean and Naima S. Dean of Mill Valley and Isa E. Dean of Boston. Brothers Emanuel (Carol) Dean of Richmond, CA, Howard (Susie) Dean Jr. of Pasadena and sisters Maudice (John) Cornwall of Jamaica, NY, Edith Hoyle, Betty Thomas and Jean Germain of Pasadena, CA. Delano was a father, brother, advisor, friend and inspiration to all who knew him. We will miss most his strength, his realness, his laugh and that ìlook.î He is loved deeply and already missed.
His ashes will be scattered in a private ceremony. A Memorial Celebration of Delanoís life will be held Sunday, June 16th, 2002 at t he Muir Beach Community Center, 19 Seacape Drive, Muir Beach, CA at 1:00 pm. For information call 415-381-6958 after May 15th, 2002. In lieu of flowers, donations in Delanoís memory may be made to KCSM in San Mateo.
